As of May of 2012, medical technology company Boston Scientific was facing around three hundred lawsuit claims in regard to vaginal mesh products. These Boston Scientific mesh lawsuits blamed the company and its surgical mesh implants for a variety of painful and troubling complications that occurred following the use of their products in both pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. According to the FDA, the use of surgical mesh in these conditions is known to introduce new risks that are not present in other forms of treatment. Furthermore, the complications are not linked to one particular model or brand of mesh and vaginal mesh does not appear to provide any clinical benefits.
There have been both federal and state level lawsuits filed against Boston Scientific for its vaginal mesh devices. The federal mesh lawsuits against Boston Scientific have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Charleston, West Virginia. The large increase in the number of these types of claims came following the FDA announcement that the complications coming from vaginal mesh surgery were not rare, which was a change from a 2008 safety warning regarding mesh.
