Pradaxa is a new prescription blood thinning drug on the market which has received much attention recently due to its potential negative and deadly effects caused to patients. Within its first year on the market, Pradaxa has been linked to causing more than 260 deaths related to internal bleeding and Pradaxa cerebral hemorrhaging.
After being on the market for a mere 3 months, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had been delivered over 300 adverse complication reports from patients claiming to suffer from cerebral hemorrhaging, internal bleeding, and other severe Pradaxa complications.
What is Cerebral Hemorrhaging?
Cerebral hemorrhaging, also known as a brain hemorrhage seen in Pradaxa patients is similar to a stroke. Cerebral hemorrhages are a result of the bursting of an artery in the brain which may cause localized bleeding in the affected area and nearby tissue. The internal bleeding within the brain (hemorrhaging) destroys brain cells. The English word, hemorrhage is derived from the Greek word for blood “hemo.” In Greek, the word hemorrhage means ‘blood bursting forth.’
Some other terms for a cerebral hemorrhage are intracerebral hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhage, and brain hemorrhage. It is believed that cerebral hemorrhages are responsible for approximately 13% of strokes.
What Happens During Cerebral Hemorrhaging?
After the blood caused by the cerebral trauma starts interfering with the brain tissues, this causes swelling inside the brain. This is sometimes also referred to as a cerebral edema. The blood which has pooled because of the cerebral hemorrhage gathers in a body called a hematoma. The rising amount of blood coming from the hemorrhage puts more pressure on the nearby brain tissue which lowers the correct amount of blood flowing within the brain.
Cerebral hemorrhaging from this type of incident can occur within the brain, in between layers of the outside covering of the brain, or even between the membranes which cover the brain. Cerebral hemorrhaging is a very serious problem, and is accompanied by many severe symptoms.
Cerebral Hemorrhaging: Symptoms
Cerebral hemorrhaging symptoms can vary widely from case to case. Symptoms of a cerebral hemorrhage may depend on the location in which the hemorrhaging occurs, severity of bleeding, and the extent that the surrounding tissue is damaged by the cerebral hemorrhage. The exhibition of cerebral hemorrhage symptoms may also vary from case to case. In some instances, cerebral hemorrhage symptoms may appear gradually, or they may arrive all at once.
If you experience symptoms of cerebral hemorrhage, you should contact a medical professional. Some common symptoms of a Cerebral Hemorrhage may include:
- Seizures with no history of seizures
- Weakness in an arm or leg
- Sudden and severe headache
- Loss of balance
- Loss of motor skills
- Nausea and vomiting
- Changes in vision
